Have you ever strolled down a street named after a medieval Jewish scholar? Welcome to Rehavia in Jerusalem a neighborhood where history whispers from every corner. Rehavia is more than just a place it’s a captivating blend of architectural charm and cultural significance. Established in the early 1920s on land leased from the Greek Orthodox Church Rehavia was meticulously planned. The German-born Jewish architect Richard Kauffmann designed it as a garden suburb. He incorporated garden city principles and the International Style. Narrow curved streets minimize traffic creating a tranquil atmosphere.

Rehavia initially attracted German-Jewish immigrants affluent Sephardic families and key leaders of the Yishuv. It quickly gained a reputation as an aristocratic enclave. The neighborhood’s unique character is reflected in its street names. Many honor Jewish scholars and poets from the Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain. Think Maimonides Nachmanides and Abraham ibn Ezra just to name a few. A few exceptions exist like Keren Kayemet Le’Israel Street and Ussishkin Street.

But Rehavia’s story extends beyond its elegant streets and distinguished names. Did you know that Emperor Haile Selassie lived on Al-Harizi Street for a brief period during his exile? This fact adds a fascinating layer to the neighborhood’s rich past. Rehavia’s history is deeply intertwined with the lives of prominent figures. David Ben-Gurion Israel’s first prime minister lived here. So did Golda Meir Israel’s fourth prime minister. Many other early national leaders and intellectuals also called Rehavia home.

The neighborhood is home to important institutions. The Jewish Agency the Jewish National Fund and Keren Hayesod are all located in Rehavia. The original residence of President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi stands as a testament to the neighborhood’s historical importance. Yad Ben-Zvi a research institute established by Ben-Zvi is also here. Jason’s Tomb a significant archaeological find was discovered during construction work. The Schocken library houses the country’s largest collection of German books. Beit Aghion the Prime Minister’s official residence is another prominent landmark.

Rehavia’s story is one of careful planning elegant design and fascinating history. It’s a neighborhood where the past and present intertwine creating a truly unique and captivating experience.
