From a humble start in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to its current home in Denver, the story of Regis University is one of resilience and growth. Regis University began its journey in 1877 as Las Vegas College, founded by exiled Italian Jesuits. Just imagine those early days, shaping a new institution in unfamiliar territory. In 1884, opportunity knocked in the form of an invitation from the Bishop of Denver. He beckoned the Jesuits to establish a college in Morrison, Colorado. This led to the opening of Sacred Heart College. A few years later, in 1887, Las Vegas College and Sacred Heart College merged and relocated to the very spot where Regis University stands today. The institution became the College of the Sacred Heart, nestled against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

Regis University’s name honors Saint John Francis Regis, a 17th-century Jesuit known for his compassionate work with marginalized communities in France. The formal renaming to Regis College took place in 1921. This marked not only a tribute to a remarkable figure but also a significant step in the institution’s evolution. Further solidifying its dedication to education, the preparatory section of Regis College separated to become the renowned Regis Jesuit High School. The university’s commitment to service is deeply rooted in its Jesuit heritage. This is exemplified by initiatives like the Father Woody Project, which brings joy and support to Denver’s homeless population during the Christmas season.

Regis University didn’t just focus on academics. It also embraced the arts and athletics. The campus even hosted legendary musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Queen. Queen’s 1974 performance at Regis marked their very first concert in the United States. Imagine being in that audience, witnessing history in the making. In 1991, Regis College officially became Regis University, reflecting its expanded academic offerings and reach. The university comprises three colleges: Regis College, the Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions, and the Anderson College of Business and Computing. Each college plays a vital role in shaping well-rounded graduates ready to make a difference in the world.

Regis University’s influence extends beyond academics and the arts, into the realm of global affairs and social justice. Pope John Paul II visited the campus in 1993, meeting with President Bill Clinton for the first time. This historic encounter took place in Carroll Hall on the Northwest Denver Campus. The university has hosted numerous Nobel Peace Prize recipients and influential speakers, fostering dialogue and inspiring action on important global issues. Regis University also boasts a vibrant athletic program, with its teams, the Rangers, competing in the NCAA Division II. From its modest beginnings to its current status as a respected university, Regis University has remained true to its mission of educating men and women for others. The university’s story continues to unfold, driven by a commitment to intellectual pursuit, social justice, and community engagement.
