Founded in 1971 the Regensburg Technical University of Applied Sciences stands before us. A modern institution with deep roots. Its history stretches back to the mid-19th century. A private school for construction and plan drawing was established then. Johann Dörner a private drawing teacher started it all.
This humble beginning grew. In 1868 it merged with the Royal Bavarian Vocational School. The school expanded its offerings in construction trades. By 1953 it transformed into the School for Construction and Civil Engineering.
The need for more engineers grew. In 1958 the Johannes-Kepler-Polytechnikum was born. This added Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. It was named after the famous mathematician Johannes Kepler. This expansion aimed to train local engineers. It aimed to address a shortage of technical specialists in East Bavaria.
The Bavarian government took over in 1964. They decided to create a new university model the Fachhochschule. This merged the Johannes-Kepler-Polytechnikum with other schools. The Fachhochschule Regensburg was founded in its modern form. Business administration computer science and social sciences joined the offerings.
The university continued to evolve. In 2006 a new Bavarian Higher Education Act changed things. The core task of teaching expanded to include applied research and academic continuing education. This further scientific profiling led to a name change.
On October 1 2013 the university became the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg. This title came after winning a competition. It’s one of only seven Bavarian universities with this title. The university focused its research and teaching. The five key areas were energy and mobility information and communication life sciences and ethics production and systems and buildings and infrastructure.
Rapid growth caused space problems. In 1977 a solution appeared. Surplus space in the University of Regensburg buildings was used. The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and parts of the Faculty of Technology moved there. This started a joint science campus.
More growth meant another move. In 1995 the decision was made to relocate to a new campus. New faculty buildings were constructed over the years. Today parts of the Faculty of Applied Natural and Cultural Sciences remain on the old campus.
Now the Regensburg Technical University of Applied Sciences thrives. Eight faculties offer numerous degree programs. Its focus remains on practical hands-on learning. The university boasts high rankings and numerous international partnerships. It continues to train the next generation of experts shaping the future of East Bavaria and beyond. The spirit of innovation lives on. It started with a simple drawing school. Today it is a leading technical university. The journey from a small school to a major university is a testament to perseverance. It showcases the evolving needs of a region and its dedication to education.
