How about a journey back in time to when stars whispered their secrets to those who dared to listen? Right before us stands the Refraktorgebäude. It is not just bricks and mortar. It is a portal to the cosmos.

The Refraktorgebäude or Great Refractor boasts a history as rich as the night sky it studies. Completed in 1899 this building was the scientific heart of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam. It propelled forward our understanding of the universe.

Imagine Kaiser Wilhelm II himself standing where you are now. He inaugurated this magnificent telescope. Director Vogel spoke of a bright future for astronomical discovery.

This impressive structure houses a double telescope. One lens boasts 80 cm aperture and the other 50 cm. The larger lens was designed for astrophotography. The smaller was for visual work.

The telescope itself was built by Repsold. The objective lenses were crafted from glass blanks made in Jena by Schott. Steinheil of Munich meticulously figured the lenses.

Back then, the dome’s opening moved in perfect synchronization with the telescope. The floor inside the dome rotated. This kept the astronomer perfectly aligned with the viewing end.

The observatory was already renowned for its stellar spectroscopy. A new telescope was needed to expand this area of study. The 30 cm Schroder telescope was simply not enough.

The astronomers at Potsdam made major discoveries. They determined that Spica was a spectroscopic binary in 1878. They also made a breakthrough in understanding Algol.

In 1904, a groundbreaking discovery shook the astronomy world. Astronomer Professor Hartmann found calcium in interstellar space using this very telescope of the Refraktorgebäude.

The Great Refractor building is also noted for its collection of photographic plates. These plates date back to the late 19th century. They are invaluable for modern software-driven searches.

The telescope suffered damage during World War II. It was lovingly repaired in the early 1950s. Astronomical work continued until 1968.

In 1983, the Refraktorgebäude earned recognition as a historical monument. A foundation was established in 1997. It ensured its preservation and functionality.

The dome weighs 200 tons. It was constructed of iron and wood. Electric motors could rotate it in just five minutes. There was also a manual option.

Two spectrographs were specifically developed for this double refractor. The larger one used three prisms crafted by Steinheil.

The Great Refractor is more than just a telescope. It is a testament to human curiosity. It demonstrates our relentless pursuit of knowledge. The Refraktorgebäude stands as a beacon. It inspires us to look up and ponder the mysteries of the cosmos. It reminds us that even the most distant stars are within our reach.
