Could a village change allegiance? Reerslev in Roskilde, Denmark certainly did. Reerslev sits quietly now in Høje-Taastrup Municipality. Yet, its heart once belonged to Roskilde. This seemingly simple village holds a history intertwined with powerful bishops, forgotten monasteries, and the echoes of gravel diggers. Reerslev’s story begins in the medieval era, when it was firmly under the control of the Roskilde bispestol. The bishopric’s influence reached far and wide. It owned significant portions of land in Reerslev, tying the village’s fate to the church. These lands even connected Reerslev to altars within the grand Roskilde Cathedral. Specifically, the Primæ Vor Frue and Maria Magdalene altars benefited from the resources generated in Reerslev. Beyond the bishopric, other religious institutions held sway in Reerslev. Agnete Kloster and Sorø Kloster each owned parts of the village. Even smaller portions, called præbender, were controlled by various religious figures. By 1682, Reerslev comprised 21 gårde, contributing significantly to the region’s agricultural output. But change was inevitable. Starting in the late 19th century, gravel extraction became a major industry. Many farmers sold their land to gravel companies. This shift marked a turning point. It altered the landscape and Reerslev’s economic focus. One lasting remnant of this era is a small building by Lundhøjgård, constructed in 1870. Originally a gårdmejeri (farm dairy), it predates the cooperative dairies that emerged in the 1880s. The 20th century brought further transformations. In 1957, a new school designed by Carl Møller was built. It housed not only classrooms, but also the kommunekontor (municipal office) and the library, emphasizing Reerslev’s role as a local center. However, the biggest administrative shift came in 1970. Reerslev became part of Høje-Taastrup Kommune. This separated Reerslev from Vindinge, which remained within Roskilde. This change reflects the modern Reerslev. It is a village straddling the past and the present, its story etched in stone and gravel.
