Is this where time stood still? At Reerslev Kirke, it certainly feels that way. Reerslev Kirke is a charming church nestled in the village of Reerslev near Roskilde. Its history dates back to the 12th century, evident in the Romanesque architecture of its nave and chancel. Over the centuries, Reerslev Kirke has been expanded and transformed. In the 15th century, a late-Gothic style chapel, vestry, and nave extension were added, along with beautiful cross vaults. These vaults are adorned with captivating frescos from the Isefjord school, painted around 1450. They depict scenes from Christ’s life, from birth to resurrection. Though hidden for centuries under limewash after the Reformation, they were thankfully rediscovered and partially restored in 1873 by Jacob Kornerup. A visit to Reerslev Kirke is a journey through time. You witness the architectural transitions and uncover the stories whispered by centuries-old artwork.
