The history of Red Rock is rich and fascinating. Native Americans like the Southern Paiute inhabited this area for centuries. Archaeological evidence like petroglyphs and roasting pits remains. Unfortunately Red Rock has faced threats. Wildfires have scorched parts of the area in recent years. These fires along with invasive species like red brome and cheat grass pose ongoing challenges. The Bureau of Land Management works hard to mitigate these threats. It balances the need for preservation with the popularity of the area for visitors.

The geologic history of Red Rock Canyon is remarkable. Millions of years ago this area was an ocean basin. Layers of sediment accumulated and transformed into limestone. Later tectonic shifts brought about massive changes. The Keystone Thrust Fault is especially impressive. It moved older rock layers over younger ones. This created the dramatic red rock formations. These incredible sandstone peaks and walls tower up to 3000 feet high. They make Red Rock a destination for climbers from around the world.
