Why does this road pulse with such energy? This is the Red Road in Seoul. It is more than just a street. It is a symbol of passion and youth.
The Red Road is located in the Hongdae area. Hongdae is short for Hongik University. Locals found it easier to reference the area that way. Hongik University is renowned for its art programs. This has shaped the streets around the Red Road. They now have a unique free-spirit culture. You can see amateur busking, art markets, and street art murals. Cozy galleries and exhibits of young artists add to the vibe. Of course, there are also clubs.
Hongdae has become a must-visit for tourists. The growth in fashion, accessories, and cosmetic stores has helped. Many fabulous cafes and dining options add to the area’s attractiveness.
In December 2021, Hongdae was designated a special tourist zone. It was named the ‘Hongdae Culture & Arts Special Tourist Zone’. It is one of seven special tourist zones in Seoul. This designation allows the district to receive revitalization subsidies from Seoul.
The main road was painted red and is now known as Red Road. The initial pedestrian-friendly theme street was extended. It now runs from the symbolic sculpture to Sangsu Station. The Red Road is about 480 meters long. It replaced a parking street. It is now a pedestrian-friendly cultural space. The Red Road has different zones for performances and art events. You can also find a Tourist Information Center along the Red Road.
It is easy to explore Hongdae. Shops, cafes, and restaurants line Eoulmadang-ro. This main road is 1.3 kilometers long. It takes about 25 minutes to walk from one end to the other. You can explore the cross streets from the main road.
Eoulmadang-ro is exceptionally wide. This is because it was once a train line. The Danginri Line transported coal back in 1929. The road has had many names. These include Hongik University Street and Hongdae Culture Street. It has also been called Hongdae Walking Street.
For pedestrians’ convenience, Eoulmadang-ro goes car-free. This happens on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The car-free times are from 12:00 to 23:00.
As you stroll down Red Road you will find some cool places like the Kakao Friends Hongdae Flagship Store. Or how about the Line Friends Hongdae Flagship Store.
The Olive Young Hongdae Central Branch is the biggest store in Hongdae. It is located along Hongdae Shopping Street opposite KT&G Sangsangmadang.
Are you hungry? There are so many great restaurants. Colline is a flower-garden cafe. It is highly recommended for cafe lovers.
