Built in 1909, it was commissioned by the local Indian Muslim community for their daily prayers and Friday Jummah. The mosque’s design is a unique blend of Indo-Islamic, Indian, Gothic Revival, and Neo-classical styles. What’s even more fascinating is that the mosque’s designer, Habibu Lebbe Saibu Lebbe, was an unlettered architect! He relied on images and details of Indo-Saracenic structures provided by South Indian traders. Many claim that sailors approaching the port of Colombo once used the Red Mosque as a landmark, its vibrant colors standing out against the cityscape.
