Imagine students bustling around, their minds ignited with knowledge at the Rectorado UCM. This is not just any building. It is the heart of the Complutense University of Madrid.

Founded by Cardinal Cisneros, the Rectorado UCM has a rich history. The university’s origins trace back to Alcalá de Henares in 1499. Pope Alexander VI granted Cisneros permission to establish a college. This college would become a center for Theology, Canon Law, and Liberal Arts.

The first stone of the San Ildefonso College was laid in March 1499. Construction finished in 1508 and students began their studies. Pedro del Campo was elected as the first Rector in October. He inaugurated the academic year with a lecture on Aristotelian moral philosophy.

Cisneros aimed to mirror the structure of medieval European universities. These universities emphasized Theology, Medicine, and Jurisprudence. Liberal Arts served as preparatory studies. Scholarships allowed students with limited resources to attend the university.

Cardinal Cisneros started collecting books in 1502. This collection formed the foundation of the university’s library. He also initiated work on a multilingual Bible.

In 1510, Cisneros published the Constitution of the College of San Ildefonso. This document detailed regulations for studies in Art, Theology, Canon Law, and Medicine. It also included provisions for Grammar and Greek studies.

Medicine was not initially included in the papal bull. However, it was incorporated into the Constitution of 1510. The Constitution stated the necessity of medical studies for the well-being of society. It established two professorships of medicine within the college.

The university community gained its own legal status upon the Constitution’s promulgation. A Rector led this community similar to the college itself.

After facing various challenges, the university in Alcalá experienced a decline. In 1821, the General Regulations of Public Education led to the creation of the Central University of Madrid. This change suppressed the University in Alcalá a year later. The Central University was established in October 1822. It encompassed studies from the literary University of Alcalá, San Isidro, and the Natural Sciences Museum.

The return of absolutism in 1824 resulted in the University’s relocation back to Alcalá. Censorship, lack of status, and limited space in Madrid weakened the institution.

Today, Joaquín Goyache Goñi serves as the Rector of the UCM. His office is located at Avenida de Séneca, 2. He specializes in Microbiology and Immunology. His research focuses on communicable diseases in wild animals and designer vaccines.

The Rectorado UCM stands as a testament to centuries of learning. It has evolved from a humble college to a leading university. Its halls have shaped countless minds and contributed to Spain’s intellectual heritage. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of passionate debates and groundbreaking discoveries. The Rectorado UCM is more than just a building; it’s a living legacy.
