“Modeled on Vienna’s Musikverein?” you might ask while standing before Izumi Hall. It is not a secret. The director of Izumi Hall uses this role model to promote it. This clarifies the hall’s aspiration.

Welcome to Izumi Hall in Osaka. This is a concert hall designed with chamber music in mind. It is also excellent for orchestral concerts. A warm sound mix was the acoustic ideal. This allows immersion into a range of sounds.

Izumi Hall opened in April 1990. Sumitomo Life Insurance Company planned and constructed it. The hall has a shoebox-type design. It seats 821 people. Izumi Hall seeks to recreate the ideal sound field. This comes from the Musikverein’s Great Hall. The Musikverein is home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

The ceiling, wall design, floor, and chairs have meticulously controlled acoustics. Eight chandeliers contribute to the hall’s ambiance. They provide a feeling of being embraced. It is like an assemblage of musical instruments. The reverberation time is 1.8 to 2 seconds. This is appropriate for classical chamber music.

A sense of unity exists here. It is between the stage and audience. You can practically feel the assembled people breathe. This makes Izumi Hall favored by world-famous artists.

You might not know that Izumi Hall was built in 1990. The building’s exterior is modern. It resembles a bland convention center found worldwide. The performer’s entrance is plain. But entering the hall is a mini shock. One step takes you back to the 19th century. Izumi Hall lacks the glittering gold of its Vienna role model. Instead, it features warm, dark wood finishes that shimmer.

When performing here, musicians experience effortlessness. It is like in the Musikverein. Just play one note. The hall takes care of everything else. Sounds evolve almost by themselves. Minimal guidance points them in the desired direction. Izumi Hall flatters the highest frequencies. This creates a restrained, warmer effect. Musicians can push boundaries more. Izumi Hall forgives sound levels. These levels would raise the roof in Vienna.

Izumi Hall houses unique instruments. These cannot be found in other halls. A pipe organ made by Koenig of France features bright and soft tones. There is also a fortepiano by Nanette Streicher from the 1820s. This was the era of Beethoven.

Izumi Hall produces about 30 unique concerts a year. These leverage the hall’s unique characteristics. Leading artists from Japan and abroad perform here. Local performers are actively featured. The hall focuses on familiarizing everyone with classical music. It also trains young musicians and talents.

The resident orchestra is Izumi Sinfonietta Osaka. It comprises musicians associated with the Kansai region. They present new music for the next generation. This is done through premieres and performances. They play modern and contemporary music.

Wide stage doors and an instrument elevator are practical. Large storerooms are directly behind the stage. Osaka puts these storerooms to good use. Izumi Hall provides an arsenal of superb instruments. These include harpsichords, fortepianos, Steinway D models, Bösendorfer Imperials, and Yamaha grand pianos.

Musicians enjoy direct access from the Otani Hotel to the hall. You can rush from your room to the stage in evening attire. The hotel and concert hall are next to Osaka Castle and Park. This gives Izumi Hall extra points. Its proximity to Osaka’s bustling restaurant districts makes this concert venue magnificent. Izumi Hall is a jewel for both performers and audiences alike.
