Standing here at the Rebero Genocide Memorial, a solemn hush hangs in the air. This quiet sanctuary, nestled on a hill overlooking Kigali, is more than just a place of graves. The Rebero Genocide Memorial is dedicated to remembering both Tutsi and non-Tutsi political figures who were targeted or bravely opposed the atrocities of the 1994 genocide. We will see names and stories of those who stood against the evil of the genocide. Most of them were part of the Rwandan government. But they decided to oppose the hatred that led to the genocide. These individuals paid the ultimate price for their courage and belief in human rights, justice, and a future free from horrors. Over 14,400 souls are buried here, their lives cut short by unimaginable brutality. The memorial reminds us that even in times of unimaginable darkness and hate, there are always those who choose to be a light in the world.
