Tucked away in Mannheim-Käfertal, the RaumZeitLabor buzzes with creative energy. This isn’t your typical community center. The RaumZeitLabor, housed in the former Standard Elektrik Lorenz building, is a hackerspace, a place where technology, art, and community collide. The name itself, RaumZeitLabor, which translates to “SpaceTimeLaboratory,” hints at the innovative spirit within. Founded by the non-profit organization RaumZeitLabor e.V. in 2010, this unique space fosters learning, collaboration, and experimentation. Imagine a place where you can learn to solder, design 3D models, or even operate a computer-controlled sewing machine. The RaumZeitLabor offers all of this and more. Four rooms, totaling around 200 square meters, house a diverse range of equipment. From a 40-watt carbon dioxide laser to multiple 3D printers and a plethora of electronics, the RaumZeitLabor empowers its members to bring their ideas to life. But the RaumZeitLabor is more than just equipment. It thrives on its community of around 100 members who contribute not only financially but also through their passion and expertise. Membership isn’t required to participate in many of the workshops and meetings, reflecting the RaumZeitLabor’s commitment to open access and knowledge sharing. This ethos of transparency extends beyond workshops. The RaumZeitLabor is known for its open approach to information, even publishing its bank balance. This radical transparency welcomes non-members and fosters a sense of collective ownership. The RaumZeitLabor also has a playful side, organizing events like Trollcon, a conference dedicated to the social phenomenon of trolling. This event has garnered national attention, highlighting the hackerspace’s unique blend of technology and social commentary. From the intricacies of a 40-watt laser to the complexities of internet trolling, the RaumZeitLabor offers a space where curiosity thrives and boundaries are pushed. It is a testament to the power of community, the thrill of learning, and the endless possibilities of technology.
