Rathgar Methodist Church

Did you know that Rathgar Methodist Church boasts a history woven with the threads of skilled architects? Standing proudly on Brighton Road it’s a beautiful example of Early English style architecture. Designed in 1874 by Thomas Holbrook a prominent Dublin architect his vision took shape in this stunning building. Holbrook a busy man also designed other Methodist churches in the area. Rathgar Methodist Church wasn’t built in a day. The foundation stone was laid in February 1874. The church officially opened its doors on August 7 1874. A remarkable feat considering the estimated cost of £2000. The building project extended beyond the church itself. Five years later a hall sexton’s house and manse were added. By 1893 the complex was complete with a church parlour kitchen organ and spire. Another architect James John Phillips stepped in to finish the work. He added the finishing touches creating a masterpiece of Methodist architecture. But the story of Rathgar Methodist Church doesn’t end there. In 1909 further improvements were undertaken. These renovations included new ventilation a pulpit and electric lighting. George Francis Beckett a Dublin architect oversaw this upgrade. The church reopened on October 10 1909. Yet another significant phase in the church’s development followed. By 1919 the church was becoming too small for its growing congregation. An extension was planned incorporating a war memorial and window. Richard Francis Caulfeild Orpen another architect created this addition in 1924. The new space included transepts choir chancel organ chamber and vestry. The organ itself was enlarged too. The War Memorial window a striking feature displays three scenes from the Resurrection. It was the work of Heaton Butler and Bayne. Rathgar Methodist Church’s story highlights the dedication and skill of several architects.
