Hidden amongst the gleaming skyscrapers of Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong district lies a spiritual heart. Ratchaprasong is known as the “Intersection of Gods”. It’s a fitting name. This bustling intersection is home to not one, not two, but nine Hindu shrines. They reside alongside some of the city’s most luxurious shopping malls. This creates a unique blend of modern consumerism and ancient devotion. Ratchaprasong pulsates with energy. It represents the vibrant fusion of old and new that defines modern Bangkok. The most famous shrine at Ratchaprasong is the Erawan Shrine. It houses a golden statue of the four-faced Brahma. This is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. They come to offer prayers, incense, and marigold garlands. Often, you’ll find traditional Thai dancers performing. They’ve been hired by worshippers to express gratitude for answered prayers. But the Erawan Shrine is not alone. Eight other shrines dot the Ratchaprasong area. These include shrines dedicated to Lakshmi, Uma, Trimurti, Ganesh, Indra, Narayana riding on Garuda, Narayana riding on Naga, and the Four Heavenly Kings. Each shrine offers a unique glimpse into Hindu mythology and its enduring presence in Thai culture. Ratchaprasong isn’t just a place of worship. It’s also a shopper’s paradise. Towering malls like CentralWorld and Central Chidlom offer a dizzying array of goods. From designer labels at Gaysorn Village to local handicrafts at Amarin Plaza, there’s something for everyone. During the festive season, Ratchaprasong transforms into a dazzling spectacle of light. Thousands of twinkling lights adorn the buildings, trees, and even the BTS Skytrain pillars. This tradition, started by The Peninsular Plaza and The Regent hotel, has grown to encompass the entire district. It makes Ratchaprasong the most brightly lit area in Bangkok during the holidays. However, Ratchaprasong has also seen its share of turmoil. The intersection was a key site of the 2010 Thai political protests. The area was occupied by “Red Shirt” protesters for weeks. This led to clashes with the military and ultimately the burning of CentralWorld. Today, Ratchaprasong has been rebuilt. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the Thai people and the enduring appeal of this vibrant intersection.
