Ever heard of a company that started with torpedo boats? John T Essberger did. This is the story of Rantzau and a shipping empire. Rantzau isn’t just a name here in Hamburg. It’s linked to Von Rantzau & Co. Handels- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft. This company is at the heart of DAL Deutsche Afrika-Linien John T Essberger.

It all began in 1924. John T Essberger a British-born man founded the Atlantik-Tank-Rhederei GmbH. He was quite the character. He’d served on torpedo boats during World War I. Later he even became the leader of German seafaring under the Nazis. Imagine.

After the war things weren’t easy. His ships were lost or taken. He started again building a new fleet. He rose to become the largest private shipping magnate in Germany again. His daughter Liselotte von Rantzau-Essberger took over when he died in 1959. She expanded the business a lot. Then came the oil crisis. They had ordered two enormous tankers just before. This almost bankrupted them.

Liselotte’s sons Eberhart and Heinrich von Rantzau took the reins in the 1980s. They joined shipping alliances. They also expanded into chemical tankers. The fleet slowly grew. They even ordered new chemical tankers. One was delivered late and needed repairs. The others were initially canceled then later accepted.

DAL’s container shipping was sold to Hapag-Lloyd in 2022. Rantzau’s influence in Hamburg shipping is significant. Their story is one of incredible resilience innovation and a surprising blend of war and commerce. It is a family legacy etched into the city’s maritime history. Remember this name. Rantzau. The name is synonymous with Hamburg’s shipping heritage.
