Have you ever heard of a town with a history that goes back to the Roman Empire? Here we stand, before the Basilica of Rankweil, a place that has witnessed centuries of change and development. Rankweil, nestled in the heart of Vorarlberg, Austria, is a town steeped in rich history.

The Basilica, a testament to centuries of devotion, is a sight to behold. Its imposing facade, adorned with intricate carvings, invites you to step back in time. This very spot was once called Vinomna, a key transport hub during the Roman Empire. Roman roads converged here, connecting Chur to Augsburg, making Rankweil a vital artery for trade and communication. Its roots can be traced back to 842, mentioned in historical records as a place of significance.

In 1375, the Counts of Montfort ceded the dominion of Feldkirch, including Rankweil, to the Habsburgs. This event marked a turning point for the town, setting the stage for its future as a vital part of the Habsburg empire. The Basilica, not immune to the ravages of time, was heavily damaged in a fire during the Old Zrich War in 1445. However, it was meticulously restored and expanded, becoming a beacon of faith and resilience. The town’s coat of arms even features an image of the Basilica, symbolizing its importance to Rankweil’s identity.

In 1618, Rankweil was granted market rights, establishing its position as a center for commerce. This led to its growth and prosperity, further cementing its place in the history of the region. Since 1918, Rankweil has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg.

But Rankweil’s history is not just about grand events. It’s also about the everyday lives of its people. In 1910, the Sigmund Nachbauer Memorial was inaugurated, commemorating Josef Sigmund Nachbauer, a leader in the uprising against Bavaria in 1809.

Today, Rankweil is a vibrant town with a rich past, a mix of modern amenities and centuries-old charm. The Basilica, still a place of pilgrimage, stands as a testament to the town’s enduring faith and its enduring spirit.
