“Los Cerritos means ‘the little hills'” Did you know that? Standing before Rancho Los Cerritos Museum you’re looking at more than just a beautiful building. You’re looking at a living testament to California’s rich history.

Rancho Los Cerritos is a National Historic Landmark. It’s been a lot of things over the years. It was once the heart of a massive 27000-acre cattle and sheep ranch. Then it became a family home. Today it’s a museum. It preserves the legacy of the Gabrielino-Tongva people who lived on this land for over 5000 years.

Imagine Jonathan Temple a Yankee pioneer who became a Mexican citizen. In 1844 he built this stunning Monterey Colonial adobe. It was the largest and most impressive adobe residence in Southern California during the Mexican period. The house served as the headquarters for his extensive ranch.

Later Jotham Bixby known as the “father of Long Beach” acquired the property. He raised his family here in the 1870s. The museum is furnished in Victorian style reflecting that era. You can almost feel the echoes of their lives. The presence of their seven children. Their laughter and conversations.

The Bixby family owned the ranch for many years. They even leased or sold off parts of it. Downey Paramount and Lakewood all began as parts of this sprawling ranch. The adobe fell into disrepair for a time. But in 1955 the City of Long Beach bought it. They restored the house and opened it as a museum.

Today Rancho Los Cerritos Museum offers tours programs and events. It’s a place where history comes alive. You can explore the formal Italian gardens with olive pomegranate and cypress trees. The museum also has a research library filled with books about California’s history.

Rancho Los Cerritos tells a story. It is about land and people. About ranching and family. About preservation and community. It shows how one place can hold so many stories. So many lives. It’s a place you’ll want to linger in. A place that will stay with you long after you leave. Take a moment. Breathe in the history. Feel the weight of time. Let Rancho Los Cerritos enrich your understanding of California.
