Rancho Buena Vista High School opened its doors in September 1987. It quickly became a cornerstone of the Vista Unified School District. Did you know it’s one of the largest schools in San Diego County? At one point, over 2,700 students roamed these halls. Rancho Buena Vista High School isn’t just big, it’s prestigious. It holds the distinction of being a California Distinguished School and an International Baccalaureate World School. In the early 1990s, Rancho Buena Vista High School received the ultimate recognition. It was awarded the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence, not once, but twice. This award, bestowed by the United States Department of Education, is the highest honor an American school can achieve. Rancho Buena Vista High School was the first school in California to offer the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It remains one of only a handful of schools in the US to offer this program. Beyond academics, Rancho Buena Vista High School boasts a vibrant arts scene. The school’s annual USO show and ArtSplash festival are legendary. Its drama program, under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Mark Scott, consistently earned top honors at state competitions. Even the school’s drum line has graced the stage of “Good Morning San Diego.” Rancho Buena Vista High School even made it into the world of video games. You can find its Longhorn emblem on the wall in the “School II” level of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. Not all stories at Rancho Buena Vista High School are celebratory. In recent years, the school has faced some difficult times. A former teacher’s conviction for child pornography and a speech therapist’s arrest for sending threatening messages cast a shadow over the campus.
