The tranquil waters of Ramsey Bay hold echoes of a maritime tragedy. On a March day in 1956, the Fleetwood Lady, a trawler based in Fleetwood, anchored in the bay. Three crew members went ashore to visit their families. Tragedy struck as they returned to their vessel. Their small rowing boat capsized, claiming the lives of all six men on board. Years later, a plaque was unveiled in Ramsey, a poignant reminder of the lives lost in the bay’s waters.
Ramsey Bay also played a role in the era of pirate radio. In the summer of 1964, a ship bearing the name Radio Caroline sailed into Ramsey Bay. From these waters, Radio Caroline North broadcast its signal, becoming a part of the island’s unique history. The ship remained there until it was towed away in 1968, ending its chapter in the bay’s story.
