Ramona Park: a name whispered with community pride. Here at Ramona Park, history intertwines with recreation. Let’s uncover its story together.

In 1951, the City Council made a decision. They chose to buy this land from Certified Markets. This marked the beginning of Ramona Park.

Imagine this space without baseball diamonds or playgrounds. Today, Ramona Park boasts many amenities. There is a baseball field for aspiring athletes. A soccer field awaits those with fancy footwork. Two tennis courts stand ready for a match. Basketball and volleyball courts provide space for team sports. A roller hockey rink offers a unique activity. Children’s laughter fills the playground. The community center stands as a hub.

The community center’s completion in 1995 was a milestone. Funding came from the Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1992. The State Parks Bond Act of 1988 also contributed. Park Impact Fees played a role too. Playground and field lighting got an upgrade in 1997. This was again thanks to the 1992 Bond Act.

Now, fast forward to today. Ramona Park is undergoing major improvements. These enhancements are part of the City’s Elevate ’28 Infrastructure Investment Plan. The Ramona Park Signature Playground project is underway.

The current playground was last renovated in 1997. It is outdated and in need of significant repairs. The design will feature an updated inclusive playground. It is designed for various age groups. Shade structures will offer respite from the sun. Upgraded seating areas will invite relaxation. This project aims to create an inviting environment. It will be a more engaging and accessible space for families.

The project includes many proposed features. There will be ADA-compliant amenities. These include play equipment, pathways, and parking stalls. Shade structures and fog misters will help reduce heat. Enhanced landscaping will add trees for shade. Play equipment will stimulate sensory, physical, and imaginative play. Safety surfacing with shock-absorbing material is planned. New benches and picnic tables will dot the landscape.

This Elevate ’28 project has a budget of $2,550,000. Funding comes from various sources. A $1,500,000 grant comes from California State Parks. A $550,000 Community Development Block Grant is from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. $500,000 comes from Measure A funding.

While construction is underway, some areas are affected. The Ramona Park Playground remains closed. However, the Ramona Park facility stays open. Visitors can still access the building. The southern parking lot is closed for equipment staging. Street parking and the northern parking lot remain available.

Ramona Park is more than just a park. It’s a testament to community investment. It is a place for recreation, gathering, and growth. As the playground transforms, Ramona Park’s legacy continues. It is a legacy of providing accessible and enjoyable public spaces for everyone.
