Rambam Health Care Campus isn’t just another hospital. It’s the largest medical center in northern Israel and the fifth largest in the entire country. Rambam, as it’s often called, stands as a testament to medical innovation and preparedness. This incredible institution, located in Haifa’s Bat Galim neighborhood, opened its doors in 1938. It was originally called the British Government Hospital of Haifa. The British High Commissioner at the time, Sir Harold MacMichael, even declared it “the finest medical institution in the Middle East.”
Rambam Health Care Campus is named after the renowned 12th-century physician-philosopher, Maimonides, often referred to as Rambam. It serves as a teaching hospital affiliated with the prestigious Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Imagine a hospital treating 80,000 inpatients and 600,000 outpatients annually. That’s the scale of Rambam’s impact. It has 36 departments, 1,000 beds, and a multitude of medical units, institutes, and laboratories. Rambam provides comprehensive medical care for all of northern Israel, including trauma treatment, oncology, and neurosurgery. It’s also a level I trauma center, employing a multidisciplinary approach to ensure patients receive the best possible care.
But perhaps the most remarkable feature of Rambam is the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital. This innovative facility began its life as a three-floor parking lot. In the event of an emergency, it can transform into a 2,000-bed hospital within 72 hours. This incredible feat of engineering was designed to withstand conventional, chemical, and biological attacks. It even has its own power generation and stores enough essential supplies for three days. Rambam isn’t just focused on emergency preparedness. It also boasts the Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital, home to the largest pediatric emergency department in northern Israel. This nine-story building features state-of-the-art medical facilities, a museum, classrooms, and even a movie theater. In 2016, the Joseph Fishman Oncology Center opened its doors, offering nine floors and 10,000 square meters of space dedicated to cancer treatment.
