Originally known as Aram Bagh, or “Garden of Rest,” Ram Bagh is the oldest Mughal garden in India. Emperor Babur, the first Mughal emperor, designed this haven in 1526. He envisioned a Persian paradise, where the flow of water mirrored the rivers of paradise mentioned in the Quran. Ram Bagh’s charbagh design, with pathways and canals dividing the garden into four quadrants, reflects this Islamic ideal. It’s even said that Babur’s remains rested here briefly before their final journey to Kabul. Later, Nur Jahan, the talented wife of Emperor Jahangir, further enhanced Ram Bagh’s beauty, showcasing her exceptional skills as a garden designer. The garden became a place of both tranquility and political strategy. Emperor Jahangir, it’s said, waited within Ram Bagh’s walls, choosing the most auspicious hour to enter Agra after his victory at Kangra Fort. The cascades, three tiers of flowing water, weren’t just for beauty. They provided a cool respite from Agra’s heat.
