Gazing across the Detroit River, with the Windsor skyline shimmering in the distance, stands the Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail. This isn’t just a trailhead. It’s a portal, the official southern starting point of Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail. This incredible trail stretches over 2,000 miles across the state, all the way to Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula. Imagine embarking on a journey from right here, at the Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail, and traversing the entire length of Michigan. The Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail was officially opened in April 2022. It’s more than just a starting point. It’s a destination in itself, complete with a park kiosk, a plaza with picnic tables under a pergola, and a dedicated parking lot. And as you set foot on the Ralph Wilson Trail, a six-mile paved path encircling Belle Isle, don’t forget to admire the “One World… Under Michigan Stars” sculpture. This stunning glass and steel creation by Erik and Israel Nordin of the Detroit Design Center provides a breathtaking frame for the historic William Livingstone Lighthouse in the distance. The Ralph Wilson Trail itself offers a unique experience. The eastern half, running along the beach, is ready to welcome you. From the Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail, you can cycle or stroll along the shore all the way to the MacArthur Bridge. The western half, facing Canada, is currently under construction and will soon complete the loop around the island. The Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail is also the starting point for another adventure. The Eugene and Elaine C. Driker Trail begins here, leading you through the island’s natural wonders around the Blue Heron Lagoon, towards the Livingston Memorial Lighthouse. This interconnected network of trails offers a diverse experience of Belle Isle, from scenic waterfront views to tranquil natural settings. The Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail is named in honor of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., a Detroit native, entrepreneur, and long-time owner of the Buffalo Bills. His foundation generously contributed to the creation of this gateway and other trails in southeast Michigan, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the natural beauty of the region. So, as you stand at the Ralph Wilson Gateway & Trail, remember that you are at a crossroads of history and nature, a place where a simple path can lead to a journey of a thousand miles.
