High in the Sahyadri Mountains, Raigad Fort stands as a silent sentinel. It watches over the city of Mahad. Have you ever wondered what secrets these ancient stones hold? Raigad, once known as the capital of the Maratha Empire, is more than just a fort. It’s a time capsule. It’s brimming with stories of courage, ingenuity, and the rise of a powerful kingdom. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the visionary Maratha ruler, crowned himself king here in 1674. He transformed Raigad into the heart of his Hindavi Swaraj. Imagine the grandeur of that day. The echoes of celebration against the backdrop of these majestic mountains. The fort, meticulously designed with the help of chief engineer Hiroji Indulkar, is a marvel of military architecture. Raigad’s defenses were renowned throughout the Deccan Plateau as some of the strongest. The climb to the top involves 1,737 steps. But for those seeking a quicker ascent, the Raigad Ropeway offers a thrilling four-minute ride. It spans 750 meters and climbs 400 meters high, providing stunning views. Within the fort’s walls lie remnants of a glorious past. The wooden main palace, though now in ruins, hints at its former splendor. The queen’s quarters, six private chambers, each with its own restroom, offer a glimpse into royal life. Three watchtowers, two still standing tall, speak of vigilant guards scanning the horizon. Ganga Sagar Lake, a tranquil oasis within the fort, provides a moment of serenity amidst the echoes of history. The Maha Darwaja, the fort’s main entrance, with its imposing bastions standing 20 to 21 meters high, once regulated the flow of life in and out of Raigad. The king’s court, a replica of the original throne, still faces east, towards the Nagarkhana Darwaja. This space was designed with acoustics in mind. It amplified sounds from the doorway to the throne. Raigad even has a darker side. Takmak Tok, a fenced-off cliff, was the execution point. Condemned prisoners met their end here. A statue of Shivaji now stands before the ruins of the main market. It leads to the Jagdishwar Mandir, where the name of Hiroji Indulkar and even his dog, Waghya, are immortalized. Raigad is a treasure trove of history. Each stone whispers a tale. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Maratha Empire.
