How often do you see a city skyline and instantly recognize it? Here, atop the Duomo di Milano, stands the symbol of Milan: the Raffigurazione della Madonna. The Raffigurazione della Madonna, more affectionately known as the Madonnina, is a gilded copper statue of the Virgin Mary. It was placed on this, the highest spire of the Cathedral, in 1774. The sculptor, Giuseppe Perego, envisioned a simple yet powerful image. The Virgin Mary stands on a cloud, arms open in a gesture of blessing over the city she protects. This placement was no accident. The Madonnina, standing at over 108 meters, embodies a long-standing tradition. It was decreed that no building in Milan should rise higher than the Madonna, a rule only truly challenged in the late 1950s with the construction of the Pirelli Building. Even then, a smaller replica of the Madonnina was placed atop the Pirelli building, ensuring her reign over the Milan skyline. The Madonnina is more than just a statue. She is the embodiment of Milan, her watchful gaze a beacon for its people.
