Lost in thought I stood before Rafferty Triangle. A small urban park it seems unassuming. Yet its quiet history whispers tales of bravery and sacrifice. This tranquil spot in Long Island City honors Captain Malcolm A Rafferty. A decorated soldier from the Spanish-American War. He distinguished himself at the Battle of San Juan Hill. The Adjutant General of New York noted his courageous leadership.

Rafferty’s monument stands proudly within the triangle. It’s a testament to his service. Recently restored by NYC Parks and the Newtown Historical Society it shines. The bronze plaques bear witness to his valor. But Rafferty’s story extends beyond the battlefield.

After the war he worked for a Long Island company. This company sent him to Trinidad hoping for better health. Unfortunately he contracted malaria there. He died in 1903. His body was returned to New York for a military burial.

The Rafferty Triangle was dedicated in 1932. The monument followed in 1937. Sadly vandalism marred the monument in the 1970s. The bronze crosses were stolen. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of local groups the monument now stands restored. Its medals gleam brightly once more.

Rafferty’s story reminds us of the cost of war. It also highlights the enduring power of community. Volunteers and historians worked together. They restored this small park. They restored the memory of a forgotten hero. Take a moment to appreciate the quiet tribute. Reflect on the life of Captain Malcolm A Rafferty. His legacy lives on in this humble but significant place. Rafferty Triangle is more than a park. It is a living monument to courage and resilience.
