On a crisp November day in 1823, a hush fell over the Plaza de la Cebada. Here, at the Rafael del Riego Plaque, we remember a pivotal moment in Spanish history. The Rafael del Riego Plaque marks the spot where General Rafael del Riego, a symbol of liberal resistance against absolutism, was executed. Riego, born in Asturias in 1784, had a distinguished military career, fighting against Napoleon’s forces during the Peninsular War. He was captured twice but his spirit remained unbroken. He even escaped imprisonment once.

The Rafael del Riego Plaque tells a story of defiance. In 1820, while commanding troops meant to quell uprisings in the Americas, Riego instead launched a mutiny in Cádiz. He demanded the restoration of the 1812 Constitution, which guaranteed rights and limited the power of the monarchy. This bold act ignited a flame of rebellion that spread across Spain, forcing King Ferdinand VII to concede to the people’s demands.

The Rafael del Riego Plaque stands as a testament to this victory. For a brief period, known as the Liberal Triennium, Spain tasted freedom. Riego, hailed as a hero, was promoted and elected to the Cortes Generales, the Spanish parliament. However, the forces of absolutism, both within Spain and across Europe, were not content to let this experiment in liberty continue. In 1823, a French army invaded Spain, intent on restoring Ferdinand’s absolute power. Riego, true to his principles, took command of the Third Army and fought valiantly against the invaders.

The Rafael del Riego Plaque marks not only a triumph but also a tragedy. Betrayed and captured, Riego was brought back to Madrid. Despite pleas for clemency, he was condemned for treason and hanged in this very square, La Cebada Square, on November 7th. His execution, commemorated by the Rafael del Riego Plaque, marked the end of the Liberal Triennium and the return of absolutist rule. Though his life was cut short, Riego’s legacy lived on. His name became synonymous with the struggle for liberty, and the “Himno de Riego,” a song written in his honor, became the anthem of the Second Spanish Republic. The Rafael del Riego Plaque serves as a potent reminder of the price of freedom. It reminds us of one man’s courage to challenge tyranny, a courage that echoed through the ages and shaped the course of Spanish history.
