Picture this a bustling airfield a vital link between continents. This is RAF Gibraltar. Its history is woven into the very fabric of this strategic location. RAF Gibraltar sits at the northern end of the Gibraltar peninsula a unique blend of military might and civilian activity.

For decades RAF Gibraltar played a critical role in the defence of the region. During World War II it served as a crucial base for operations in the Mediterranean. Aircraft from various Allied nations regularly transited through. The airfield itself saw significant expansion during the war. Land was reclaimed from the Bay of Gibraltar using rock blasted from the Rock itself. This expanded the runway enabling larger aircraft to land. This construction incidentally erased the former Gibraltar horse racing track.

RAF Gibraltar wasn’t just about wartime action. It played a significant role in the Anglo-American invasion of French North Africa Operation Torch. General Dwight D Eisenhower established his headquarters in Gibraltar during the planning phases. He worked in the cool damp tunnels under the Rock. These tunnels provided crucial protection. The airfield itself played a key role in the operation facilitating the movement of troops and supplies.

Today RAF Gibraltar continues to operate. Although no military aircraft are permanently stationed there. RAF and other NATO aircraft still make transient stops. The base serves a dual purpose. It also functions as Gibraltar Airport. The civilian passenger terminal is on the north side of the runway. The RAF apron and hangar are on the south side. A small number of personnel approximately 16 in 2023 remain assigned to maintain the base.

RAF Gibraltar is a place where history meets the present. A testament to the enduring importance of this location. It’s a fascinating site worth exploring. A place where the past and present intertwine. A pivotal base in the world’s history. Remember RAF Gibraltar’s role during World War II and beyond.
