The ghostly scent of aged wood hangs in the air. We stand before the Radrennbahn Hannover.
This isn’t just any cycling track. For over fifty years the Radrennbahn Hannover in the Wülfel district was a legendary venue a vibrant heart of German cycling. From 1965 to 2017 this wooden oval hosted countless races. It was one of the fastest uncovered summer tracks in the world. Think of the thrill the speed. Imagine the roar of the crowd.
Built as a replacement for the old track near the Pferdeturm the Radrennbahn Hannover boasted a 333.3-meter length. Its 6.5-meter-wide surface was made of African Afzelia hardwood. The banked curves were a steep 49 degrees. Architect Herbert Schürmann designed this marvel of speed. The track’s understructure was a clever mix of soft and hardwoods a testament to its builder’s ingenuity.
Eighteen German championships were held here. It became internationally famous for the annual Grand Prix of Hannover a world cup race for sprinters. The race was held 40 times. The Radrennbahn Hannover also nurtured young talent. Many champions rose through the ranks here their careers launched on this very ground.
The Radrennbahn Hannover e V even possessed the largest Derny pool in Europe. Fifteen Dernys were available for the regular Derny races held during summer months. Six German Derny championships were staged here.
Sadly technical issues threatened closure in 2006. Thanks to the dedication of the Region Hannover and the Radrennbahn Hannover e V the track was saved. Walter von Lütcken a renowned track builder renovated the understructure in 2007. Every year since then about 5000 meters of wooden slats were renewed. Jürgen Apel the treasurer tirelessly maintained it.
The Radrennbahn Hannover celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2010. Yet financial support ended after 2017. The last race was held on September 13 2017. The future of cycling in Hannover depends on finding private investors.
