What secrets does Radomierzyce hold? Radomierzyce, a seemingly quiet village nestled in Poland near the German border, hides a vibrant history within its charming exterior. Once known as Radmeritz, this village boasts a Baroque palace that whispers tales of extravagance and resilience. Built between 1710 and 1732 by Joachim Ziegler-Klipphausen, chamberlain to King Augustus II the Strong, the palace stands as a testament to a bygone era. Imagine, if you will, the bustling activity as the palace was constructed on an artificial island, surrounded by a moat where the Wittig and Neisse rivers meet. Originally intended as a foundation for unmarried noblewomen, Radomierzyce Palace has sheltered not only these ladies but also historical figures like Frederick the Great, General Blucher, and Prince Wilhelm. The Lützow Free Corps, a volunteer force of the Prussian army, also found refuge within the palace walls. One of their members, Theodor Körner, penned his inspiring “Aufruf” calling Saxons to arms against Napoleon right here in Radomierzyce. During World War II, the palace served as a haven for children evacuated from cities. After the war, with shifting borders, Radomierzyce became part of Poland. The remaining noblewomen were expelled, and the palace was looted, falling into disrepair. A glimmer of hope appeared in 2003 when an investor purchased the palace, intending to transform it into a hotel. Sadly, these plans were cut short by the investor’s untimely death in 2004. Today, while the palace remains inaccessible to the public, you can still stroll along the tree-lined path around the moat. Picture the noble ladies taking their daily walks here, the palace reflecting serenely in the water. Radomierzyce also boasts other historical gems, like the Baroque Saints Peter and Paul Church and the chamberlain’s mausoleum. Radomierzyce may be a small village, but its stories echo through centuries, reminding us of its rich and complex past.
