Isn’t it fascinating how a spiritual movement born in Agra in 1861 has spread its branches far and wide? I am talking about the Radha Soami Satsang. Here in Delhi stands a testament to its enduring appeal.

Radha Soami means “Lord of the Soul”. It indicates a path of spiritual seeking. This path was illuminated by Shiv Dayal Singh. His followers considered him the living master. They regarded him as the incarnation of Radhasoami Dayal.

Shiv Dayal Singh’s spiritual journey was influenced by several traditions. His parents were Vaishnava Hindus. They followed Guru Nanak of Sikhism. They were also devotees of Tulsi Sahib. Tulsi Sahib taught Surat Shabd Yog. This yoga unites the soul with divine sound. He also emphasized guru bhakti and moral living. A strict lacto-vegetarian diet was a must.

The Radha Soami Satsang movement does not promote celibacy. Most of its masters have been married. Its teachings echo esoteric mysticism from 18th and 19th-century India. Shiv Dayal Singh began giving public discourses in 1861. This is considered the movement’s founding.

After Shiv Dayal Singh’s death in 1878, several branches emerged. His disciples started their own centers. These included his wife Narayan Devi and Salig Ram. These fellowships were considered true manifestations of Shiv Dayal Singh. They followed Sant Mat “the path of the saints.”

Over twenty lineages arose but most have disappeared. The most famous branches are in Soami Bagh Agra Beas and Dayalbagh. The largest branch is the Radha Soami Satsang Beas. It was established in 1891 by Jaimal Singh. He practiced Surat Shabd Yoga on the bank of river Beas.

The Radha Soami Satsang believes in a living guru. They emphasize bhajan satsang seva kendra and bhandara. These elements form the framework of their sect. They don’t install scriptures in their sanctum. They consider it ritualistic. Instead the guru sits with the satsang and they listen to preachings and sing hymns.

The Satsang promotes social equality. It forbids caste distinctions. They also attract Dalits. They are active in charitable work. They provide free medical services and help to the needy.

Basic practices include Surat Shabd Yoga. Disciples are initiated by a living guru. Obedience to the guru is key. They believe in a moral life. Abstinence from meat drugs alcohol and sex outside marriage is required. Jivanmukti inner liberation is possible during one’s lifetime with a guru’s guidance.

Vegetarianism is a core tenet. They are strict lacto-vegetarians for ethical and spiritual reasons. They respect all life forms. They consider meat unethical. They also believe that meat produces bad karma.

The Radha Soami Satsang continues to evolve. It adapts to modern times. It still holds firm to its core principles. It emphasizes inner peace social responsibility and devotion to a living master. As we stand here before the Radha Soami Satsang in Delhi reflect on its message. It is a message of love service and spiritual awakening. It is a message that resonates with millions around the world.
