On a rainy March day in 1879, a festive crowd gathered in Milan. They were celebrating the grand opening of the Raccordo ferroviario Saronio. The Milan–Saronno railway, as it’s formally known, marked a pivotal moment in Milan’s history. It connected the bustling city to the town of Saronno. This new railway line was the brainchild of A. Vaucamps and Ambrogio Campiglio. They envisioned a vital link in the access line to the San Gottardo Railway. Their initial plan involved branching from the Milan-Rho line. The Raccordo ferroviario Saronio officially opened on March 22, 1879. Newspaper reports from the time describe the day as rainy. But the downpour didn’t dampen the spirits of those gathered at the Milan station in what is now Piazza Cadorna. Mr. and Mrs. Vaucamps were present, along with the engineers Campiglio and Bianchi. The event was a significant enough occasion to draw the attention of the entire press. An article published two days later in the newspaper “La Perseveranza” captured the excitement and celebratory atmosphere surrounding the Raccordo ferroviario Saronio’s inauguration. It described the event as having a premiere-like atmosphere. In the 1990s, the Raccordo ferroviario Saronio underwent a major transformation. The railway was completely revamped. Four tracks and new metro-type stations were built. Today, the Raccordo ferroviario Saronio is an integral part of Milan’s suburban railway network. It provides standard services to Central Milan and regional services to Novara, Malpensa, Varese, and Como. The line seamlessly integrates into the larger Milan suburban railway service. This allows for smooth transitions between local and regional travel.
