“Ahoy there” I say while adjusting my imaginary captain’s hat. Imagine yourself transported to the vibrant Queensway Quay Marina. It is one of Gibraltar’s gems.

Queensway Quay Marina is more than just a place to dock your boat. It’s a historical landmark. It is a testament to Gibraltar’s rich maritime past.

Let’s step back in time. We’ll explore the origins of this fascinating location. The quayside here is known as Ragged Staff Wharf. It is believed to be the oldest wharf in Gibraltar. Initially built by the Spanish, the British further developed the wharf in 1736. Sir Charles Wager oversaw these improvements. His goal was to improve the victualling of men-at-war.

There are many theories about the name “Ragged Staff Wharf”. However, none have been definitively proven. One suggests it comes from a nautical term. It refers to the stump mast used as a hoist. This hoist transferred barrels of water to ships at the quay.

Historically, Governors of Gibraltar would arrive here. The steps at the landing place were called Governor’s Landing. These steps are still in use today. They are part of the marina.

Queensway Quay Marina’s modern development began in December 1990. Taylor Woodrow transformed a former Ministry of Defence site. The marina opened between 1992 and 1994. In 2000, the marina changed ownership. Later, it expanded with the construction of The Island. This breakwater features townhouses each with its own swimming pool and yacht mooring. The Sails is the most recent addition to Queensway Quay Marina.

Today, Queensway Quay Marina boasts 185 berths. It can accommodate various vessels. These include large yachts. Metered water and electricity are available at all berths. Some berths also offer cable television and telephone access. The marina provides shower and toilet facilities. You can even find a laundry service here.

Queensway Quay Marina is strategically positioned. It is located at the entrance to the Mediterranean. This makes it a perfect stop for those traveling to or from the Caribbean. It’s also ideal for those looking for a winter base. Gibraltar’s tax-free status offers low-cost fuel and VAT-free shopping.

Queensway Quay Marina offers a unique blend of history and modern luxury. A peaceful waterfront location meets convenient access to Gibraltar’s bustling town center. It maintains a continuous listening watch on Channel 71. The call sign is ‘Queensway Quay Marina’. So you can reach out for berthing assistance.

As you stroll along the promenade, take in the stunning views. Enjoy the elegant restaurants and bars. Reflect on the centuries of maritime history that have unfolded here at Queensway Quay Marina.
