A curious plaque. The Queensland Aquarium Plaque. It whispers tales of Brisbane’s first amusement park. The Queensland Aquarium wasn’t just an aquarium. It was a Victorian-era wonderland. It opened with a grand celebration on August 7, 1889. Imagine a place filled with not just marine life, but tigers, panthers, bears, monkeys, and a spectacular array of birds. The Queensland Aquarium had it all. Sharks and seals swam in tanks. A black Java panther prowled its enclosure. Cockatoos screeched, and monkeys chattered. The entertainment extended beyond the animal exhibits. A huge concert hall housed a magnificent organ. Concerts filled Saturday and Sunday afternoons with music. The Aquarium Band serenaded Brisbane’s best singers. The popularity of the Queensland Aquarium spurred the development of the surrounding area. Land was subdivided and sold as “The Queensport Aquarium Estate.” Visitors arrived by steamer from the city center. The return trip on the Natone, Woolwich, or Alice was part of a package deal. Moonlit excursions to dances in the concert hall were a popular pastime. The Queensland Aquarium embraced modern technology. Electric lighting illuminated the park by September 1889. Daytime activities included New Year’s sports days and picnics on Foundation Day (Australia Day). A truly memorable event took place in May 1891. Professor Fernandez, an aeronaut, made his first balloon ascent in the colony at the Queensland Aquarium. The event nearly ended in disaster when the balloon began to deflate. It appeared destined to plunge into the river. Fortunately, it rose again and landed safely, thrilling the crowd. The Queensland Aquarium weathered the large flood of 1890. However, the flood of February 1893 proved devastating. Fences were torn down, animals escaped, and the gardens were ruined. The Queensland Aquarium Plaque commemorates this fascinating piece of Brisbane’s history. A place where entertainment and wonder met. A reminder of a time when Brisbane’s riverbanks housed a vibrant theme park.
