Did you know Queens Technical High School started life as the Queens Continuation School in 1920? It wasn’t in this impressive building. Classes were held in a rented Long Island City factory. Can you imagine? Students learning in a repurposed factory space. That’s the humble beginning of our Queens Technical High School.

The school’s early years were focused on part-time students. It wasn’t until 1929 that a new building was constructed. Vocational education became a part of the curriculum. The school was renamed Queens Vocational and Continuation School. Full-time vocational classes were established in 1935. The original offerings were quite different. Boys could learn auto repair printing or work with machines. Girls learned dressmaking and beauty culture. A commercial department was available for both. Quite a change from the wide range of tech programs available today.

In 1936 the school was renamed again. This time it became Queens Vocational High School. Over the decades shop programs changed to reflect technological advancements and job market needs. Some programs disappeared. Others were modernized. The machine shop and practical nursing programs were discontinued in the 1980s. The automation program became Computer Technology. Radio Mechanics evolved into Pre-Engineering. It was also in the 1980s that “Technical” was added to its name. This better represented its focus on career and technical education. The newest programs are Cloud Networking and Graphic Design.

A significant addition to the school was completed in 2005. This new wing finally added a cafeteria a library and a gymnasium. Before that the school lacked these basic facilities. It’s a testament to its growth and development. In 2018 the name changed one last time to its current name: Queens Technical High School. Today Queens Tech boasts an award-winning FIRST Robotics Competition Team known as the RoboTigers. They have consistently ranked among the top teams globally. They’ve earned numerous accolades for their creativity design and gracious professionalism. They truly embody the spirit of innovation and excellence.

Queens Technical High School isn’t just a school. It’s a place where innovation meets history. It is a space where students are equipped with skills for both college and careers. Many of the teachers are even alumni. It’s a family atmosphere that is part of what makes this school special. So let’s take a moment to appreciate the incredible journey of Queens Technical High School. From a factory to a state-of-the-art facility. A legacy of skill and innovation continues to flourish here.
