Did you know that Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church boasts a fascinating history spanning over a century? This stunning building stands before you a testament to Glasgow’s rich heritage. Its story begins not as Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church but as the Queen’s Park Free Church a congregation of the Free Church of Scotland formed in December 1866. Imagine the excitement as the foundation stone was laid on February 28 1874 by Patrick Playfair Lord Dean of Guild. The architect James Thomson masterfully crafted this Neo-Gothic masterpiece. Completed in just over a year it opened its doors on May 16 1875.

The church’s journey wasn’t straightforward. Name changes reflected shifting denominational landscapes. It became Queen’s Park West United Free Church in 1900 after a union. Then Queen’s Park West Parish Church in 1929 following another merger. The church continued to evolve. In 1979 it united with Strathbungo Parish Church. The name changed to Strathbungo Queen’s Park. Further unions followed. In 2000 Crosshill Queen’s Park Parish joined the fold. Finally in 2014 Govanhill Trinity Church united with the church resulting in the name Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church we know today.

Step inside and marvel at the galleried interior. Notice the two tiers of cast-iron columns and the barrel-vaulted roof. The stained glass windows created by Daniel Cottier and Douglas Hamilton are breathtaking. They tell stories of faith and resilience. Look for the memorial window dedicated to Jane Haining a Church of Scotland missionary who perished in Auschwitz. The church also houses poignant war memorials from various parishes that have merged into this one. These memorials serve as silent reminders of sacrifices made.

The church wasn’t without its controversies. In 2018 the then minister Elijah Wade Smith faced serious allegations of sexual misconduct. He was later removed from his post. This dark chapter stands in contrast to the church’s long history of service and community. Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church underwent extensive renovation between the late 1990s and 2006. Today it stands as a symbol of faith community and resilience. It continues to serve the Govanhill community and beyond. It is a place of worship and a treasure of Glasgow’s architectural and social history.
