One of the most iconic structures within the Queen’s Palace is Manjakamiadana. This wooden palace, meaning “Where It is Pleasant to Rule,” was built for Queen Ranavalona I by Frenchman Jean Laborde. Yes, you heard right, a Frenchman! It’s a fascinating blend of Malagasy design and European architectural flair. Sadly, a fire ravaged the Queen’s Palace in 1995. Many believe it was arson, but the truth remains a mystery, adding to the intrigue of this place. But like the resilient city it calls home, the Queen’s Palace is slowly being restored.
