Behold the Queen Maedhbh Sculpture a towering figure of Irish mythology. This bronze giantess stands proudly on Burlington Road. She’s a captivating presence isn’t she?

Queen Maedhbh also known as Queen Maeve or Mebh is a legendary warrior queen from ancient Ireland. The stories about her are incredible. She ruled Connaught one of the five ancient provinces of Ireland. Now there are only four.

Maedhbh’s most famous tale involves a bull. She coveted a finer bull than her husband owned. This desire led her to launch a massive raid. Her goal was to steal the finest bull in all of Ireland. This sparked a devastating war between Ulster and the other provinces. The legendary hero Cuchulainn was tasked with defending Ulster single-handedly. The other Ulster warriors were under a curse.

This magnificent statue portrays Maedhbh as a powerful woman. She holds a spear in one hand and a bull’s head in the other. A crow perches on her shoulder. The statue’s nudity symbolizes her legendary sexual appetite. The bull’s head is a direct reference to her epic battle with the King of Ulster over the magnificent bull Donn Cuailnge.

Legend says Maedhbh is buried in County Sligo under a large cairn. She’s buried standing up facing her enemies to the north. What a dramatic end for a dramatic queen.

The Queen Maedhbh Sculpture is more than just a statue. It’s a powerful reminder of Ireland’s rich and often violent past. It’s a testament to the strength and ambition of a legendary queen. It’s a symbol of Ireland’s enduring myths and legends. It’s a must-see for any visitor to Dublin. Take a moment to admire her. Let her story sink in. She truly is a remarkable figure.
