Seven centuries ago Prophet Muhammad laid the first stone of the Quba Mosque. This mosque in Medina Saudi Arabia holds immense religious significance. It is believed to be the first mosque in the world. Built around 622 CE it stands as a testament to the early days of Islam.

The Quba Mosque’s origins are tied to the Hijrah. This pivotal migration from Mecca to Medina saw Prophet Muhammad and his followers stopping in the village of Quba. There he established the mosque. Different accounts exist regarding the site’s selection. One suggests it was a date-drying area. Another mentions a woman’s donkey being tethered there. Regardless the mosque’s construction was a community effort. Prophet Muhammad himself laid the first stone. His companions followed suit.

The mosque underwent many changes across the centuries. Caliph Uthman expanded it. Later rulers such as al-Walid I rebuilt it. Other renovations occurred throughout the centuries. These included additions of mihrabs and minarets. The original mosque was relatively small. It featured a square or rectangular enclosure with an open court. A roofed area supported by columns was added.

The 1980s brought a complete reconstruction. King Fahd’s expansion dramatically increased the mosque’s size. Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil oversaw this. The old mosque was demolished to make way for the new structure. The design aimed to blend traditional Islamic architecture with modern functionality. The new Quba Mosque accommodated 20000 worshippers. It boasts four minarets and fifty-six domes. A dedicated women’s prayer area was also included.

A further expansion is currently underway. This King Salman expansion will increase the mosque’s capacity to 66000. The project includes covered plazas and improved infrastructure. It aims to connect the existing mosque with independent prayer areas.

The Quba Mosque holds immense religious significance. Praying there after performing ablutions at home is considered equivalent to performing Umrah. The Quran mentions the mosque as being founded on piety and devoutness. The mosque’s merits are frequently mentioned in Hadith. Prophet Muhammad visited the mosque every Saturday offering prayers. He encouraged others to do the same. This tradition continues to this day. The Quba Mosque remains a symbol of faith devotion and community. Its journey reflects the evolution of Islam itself.
