Quartierspark Randowstraße

From rubble to refuge. That’s the story of Quartierspark Randowstraße. This park wasn’t always a place of tranquility. It once held two school buildings and their accompanying courtyards. In 2005, those structures were demolished. The space was cleared. The community and local government decided to transform this empty space. They envisioned a neighborhood park, a Quartierspark, for everyone to enjoy. The Berlin Senate, recognizing the potential, contributed around 700,000 Euros from the “Stadtumbau Ost” program to make this dream a reality. The Kohlbrenner eG planning group, a local firm, was brought in to design the park. They worked closely with residents, incorporating their feedback and desires into the final plan. The heart of Quartierspark Randowstraße became a small wooded area, offering a natural escape within the city. Even the creation of the park had a community element. The SPI Foundation employed unemployed individuals to help construct it. The first phase, a children’s playground, was completed by the end of 2005. In 2006, locals could sponsor trees within the park. These sponsors received certificates and played a vital role in maintaining the young trees. Quartierspark Randowstraße officially opened on April 24, 2007, with Wilfried Nünthel, the Lichtenberg district councilor for urban development, presiding over the ceremony. Today, the park covers over 14,000 square meters. It features a playground in the northeast corner, shielded from the nearby streets and homes by the small forest. This playground is designed around a “forest expedition” theme. It offers challenging climbing and balancing opportunities for children. They can navigate hanging bridges and balance beams, mimicking an adventurous trek through the woods. A sandy area features swings, a double horizontal bar, hammocks, and a climbing tower. Quartierspark Randowstraße is more than just a playground. It’s a multigenerational space. A “Place of United Generations” sits adjacent to a retirement home and sports hall. This area provides benches, a central lawn, winding paths, flowering trees, hedges, and flowerbeds. It’s a place to meet, relax, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The park is accessible from Randowstraße and Welsestraße. An additional staircase was built over an embankment on Welsestraße for easy access. From demolished schools to a vibrant community park, Quartierspark Randowstraße is a testament to the power of urban renewal and community collaboration.
