Did you know that Quartiere Vialba I was only half of what was originally planned? This sprawling residential complex, nestled in the northern outskirts of Milan, speaks volumes of the post-war housing boom. Quartiere Vialba I, built between 1957 and 1960, was part of the INA-Casa initiative. The ambitious project, spearheaded by a team of architects including Ezio Cerutti and Pietro Lingeri, aimed to provide housing solutions for a rapidly growing population. Originally, Quartiere Vialba I was intended to sprawl across 30 hectares, reaching the Milano-Saronno railway and even spilling into the neighboring Novate. However, only the western half materialized. Despite its somewhat fragmented realization, Quartiere Vialba I stands as a testament to the architectural trends of its time. The design, characterized by low-rise buildings, ample green spaces, and meandering streets, aimed to foster a sense of community and discourage through traffic. One striking feature is Via Val Trompia, the neighborhood’s main artery. The north side, entirely lined with arcades, houses shops for daily needs. This innovative approach set Quartiere Vialba I apart from other developments that often faced delays in retail space construction. While the planned community center and religious building never materialized within Quartiere Vialba I, the neighborhood stands as a unique blend of ambition and architectural pragmatism. Next time you wander its curving streets, imagine the bustling community it could have been, a testament to post-war optimism and the enduring need for human connection.
