Nestled on the northwestern outskirts of Milan lies Quartiere Gallaratese. It’s a fascinating example of post-war urban planning. The district’s story begins in the mid-20th century with architect Piero Bottoni. He envisioned a community for low-income residents. This community would offer green spaces, easy access to the city, and essential public services. Construction started in 1957 with a section called “Gallaratese G.1”. Over 60 architects, under Gianluigi Reggio’s guidance, further refined Bottoni’s original design. Quartiere Gallaratese isn’t just a neighborhood. It is a testament to architectural innovation. In the late 1960s, architects Carlo Aymonino and Aldo Rossi joined the project. They brought their unique visions for social housing to life. The complex they designed is often called the “Red Dinosaur” due to its reddish color and unusual design. The Gallaratese Housing Complex covers over 120,000 square meters. It comprises five distinct buildings. Two are eight-story slabs. Another is a long three-story structure. There’s also a connecting building and Rossi’s unique contribution. Aymonino’s buildings are a medley of stepping forms, passages, and terraces. They embody his idea of a “fragmented” urban fabric. In contrast, Rossi’s building, known as “la lama Bianca” (the White Blade), is a striking white slab. Its minimalist design stands in stark contrast to Aymonino’s complex forms. It showcases Rossi’s Rationalist influences. The Quartiere Gallaratese aimed to be a self-contained community. It was meant to meet the social, cultural, and economic needs of its residents. The project faced challenges early on. Shortly after completion in 1972, homeless families occupied the complex. This led to its abandonment by 1974. Despite this, Quartiere Gallaratese has been revitalized. Today, it thrives as a middle-class condominium. Quartiere Gallaratese reflects the post-war modernist movement. It stands as a reminder of the ambitions and difficulties of creating ideal urban communities. Its design, a blend of Rationalism and fragmentism, continues to inspire urban planning and social housing discussions. Quartiere Gallaratese is a powerful symbol of urban renewal and architectural innovation.
