Picture this. A pretty little cottage. It stands before you. This is Quarters F.

This Victorian-era home is more than just a house. It’s a piece of Charleston history. Originally built in 1898 it served as a cottage for the keeper of Chicora Park. The Olmsted brothers designed this park. They were sons of the famous Frederick Olmsted.

Five years later the federal government transformed Chicora Park. It became the Charleston Navy Yard. Quarters F became the first home for officers. It housed the Admiral until a bigger house was ready. The Navy purchased the cottage and the land around it.

In 1908 the Navy expanded Quarters F. They remodeled it into a T-shape. A new kitchen and dining room were added. The original Queen Anne features were gone. The house took on a more Colonial Revival look. It is difficult to classify its architectural style now.

After the Charleston Navy Base closed in 1996 Quarters F became a rental. North Charleston now owns it. The city restored it. It will become an event venue.

Quarters F has seen many changes. From park keeper’s cottage to Admiral’s residence to rental home. It now stands as a testament to Charleston’s rich past. Its history is woven into the very wood and brick. This two-story irregular T-shaped building boasts a metal roof and brick chimneys. The original Italianate bays still exist. The main entry remains. It has double doors with sidelights and transoms. The octagonal porch bays add unique character. A 1924 sleeping porch was added to the west end. The 1908 kitchen and dining room addition stands as a testament to the Navy’s expansion. It has a gabled roof and hipped dormers.

Quarters F is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is part of the Charleston Navy Yard Officers’ Quarters Historic District. It is a stunning example of architectural adaptation. It reflects both Victorian and Colonial Revival styles. This remarkable house is more than a building. It is a living history book waiting to be read.
