One fateful night in the early 11th century, Emperor Ly Thai To dreamt of a formidable deity, Huyen Thien Tran Vu, vanquishing evil spirits. This dream inspired him to build Quan Thanh Temple in Hanoi. Quan Thanh Temple, also known as Tran Vu Temple, became one of the Four Sacred Temples protecting the newly established capital, Thang Long, now modern-day Hanoi. Quan Thanh Temple stood guard in the north, alongside Kim Lien Temple in the south, Bach Ma Temple in the east, and Voi Phuc Temple in the west. Over the centuries, Quan Thanh Temple has undergone numerous restorations. Yet, the temple retains its original charm and architectural essence. Located at the intersection of Thanh Nien and Quan Thanh Streets, Quan Thanh Temple is easily accessible. It’s a stone’s throw away from the historic Thang Long Citadel and Hanoi’s North Gate. The temple’s location also links it spiritually with Van Nien Pagoda, Tran Quoc Pagoda, and Phu Tay Ho around the picturesque West Lake. Inside Quan Thanh Temple, a magnificent 4-meter black bronze statue of Tran Vu commands attention. Flanked by a snake and a turtle, symbols of wealth and protection in Vietnamese mythology, the statue is a testament to Vietnamese bronze casting artistry. Another highlight is the intricately designed bronze gong, used in religious ceremonies and festivals. It is believed to summon divine presence and blessings. Don’t miss the delicate carvings on the doors and columns, adorned with poems and couplets in ancient Vietnamese and Chinese scripts. Quan Thanh Temple also boasts a tranquil greenery landscape. Lush gardens with ancient banyan trees and vibrant flowers create a serene atmosphere, perfect for meditation and reflection. Visiting Quan Thanh Temple offers a glimpse into Vietnamese culture and history. The annual Quan Thanh Festival, held on the third day of the third lunar month, is a vibrant celebration honoring Saint Huyen Thien Tran Vu, the protector of Hanoi’s northern gate.
