Qingshan is located within Guilin. Guilin lies in the northeastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. This region is in southern China. Guilin is known as the “Sweet Osmanthus Forest”. This is because of the many fragrant sweet osmanthus trees in the area. The city is famous for its karst topography.

Guilin is a well-known tourist destination in China. It has earned the description “By water, by mountains, most lovely”. The State Council of China recognizes Guilin as a National Famous Historical and Cultural City.

Before the Qin dynasty, the Baiyue people settled the Guilin region. A small settlement began along the Li River banks in 314 BC. The Qin dynasty set up the first administration around Guilin. Guilin Commandery is where the modern name “Guilin” comes from.

The town was renamed Guizhou in AD 507. Lingui County was established at Guilin’s modern site in 634. Guilin prospered during the Tang and Song dynasties. It became a nexus between the central government and the southwest border.

Guangnan West Circuit was established in 997 with Guizhou as its capital. Guizhou was renamed Jingjiang Prefecture in 1133. The name changed to Guilin Prefecture in 1367.

Guilin became a headquarters for Sun Yat-sen’s Northern Expeditionary Army in 1921. Guilin City was established in 1940. It served as Guangxi’s provincial capital before 1912 and from 1936 to 1949.

During World War II, Guilin grew into an important center for military activities. It also became a hub for transportation and culture. Refugees flocked to the city from all over China. The population increased dramatically from 70,000 to over 500,000 by 1944.

The State Council listed Guilin as a priority in 1981. It was one of four cities needing protection for its historical and cultural heritage. The other three were Beijing, Hangzhou, and Suzhou.

Guilin has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. This means short mild winters and long hot humid summers. The Li River flows through the city’s karst formations. These karst formations are made of Triassic period limestone and dolomite rocks.

In 2020, Guilin’s population was 4,931,137. The built-up area housed 2,148,641 residents. Guilin is home to many ethnic groups.

Local industries include condoms, pharmaceuticals, and machinery. The city also produces silk, perfume, and wine. Agricultural products include pomelos, oranges, and herbal medicine. Guilin rice noodles are a local staple.

Getting around Guilin is easy with its extensive transportation network. This includes buses and taxis. A metro system is planned for the future.
