Gazing at the placid waters of the Qing River in Beijing, it’s hard to imagine its crucial role in the city’s history. This seemingly unassuming waterway, also known as Qīng hé, has a story to tell. The Qing River wasn’t always integral to Beijing’s water system. Early capitals relied on the Yongding River, a frequently dangerous and flood-prone source. When Kublai Khan established Dadu, his new capital, he sought a safer solution. His engineer, Guo Shoujing, devised a brilliant plan. He wouldn’t rely on the volatile Yongding River. Instead, he looked north and constructed the Baifu Canal. This canal brought water into Dadu, terminating at Kunming Lake in today’s Summer Palace. The water then flowed through the city, just north of where the Beijing Zoo stands now.

The Qing River offered an ingenious solution to a growing problem. As Dadu, later Beijing, expanded, using the city’s waterways for drainage became increasingly problematic. Overflow and contamination were constant concerns. The Qing River, originating north of the Summer Palace, offered an escape route. By connecting it to the Baifu Canal, excess water could bypass the city entirely, flowing into the Qing River and preventing floods. This ingenious system protected the city and its inhabitants from the devastating effects of flooding. The Qing River acted as a crucial safety valve.

The Qing River is a testament to the forward-thinking engineering of Kublai Khan’s era. It might appear “boring” at first glance. But its role in protecting Beijing from floods reveals its true significance. It stands as a silent guardian, a vital part of the city’s history, quietly ensuring the safety and prosperity of Beijing for centuries.
