Did you know that Qazi Nurullah Shustari’s life ended in a brutal martyrdom right here in Agra? He was not just any scholar. Qazi Nurullah Shustari was a towering figure of Shia Islam in the Mughal era.

Born in 1549 in Shushtar, Iran, Qazi Nurullah Shustari journeyed to India. He arrived in 1584. He quickly became known for his sharp intellect and deep knowledge.

Qazi Nurullah Shustari even served in the court of Akbar. Some say he was the Qazi-ul-Quzaa. This means the chief judge. He was respected for his fairness.

But Qazi Nurullah Shustari’s life took a tragic turn when Jahangir ascended the throne. Enemies saw an opportunity. They presented his book “Ahqaq-ul-haq” as evidence against him. Accusations of heresy flew.

In September 1610, Qazi Nurullah Shustari was sentenced to death. The execution was cruel. He was flogged to death at the age of 61. This earned him the title Shahid-e-Salis meaning Third Martyr.

His death is remembered in Shia traditions. The book “Peshawar Nights” sheds light on his assassination.

Despite his tragic end Qazi Nurullah Shustari left behind a legacy of scholarship. He authored about fifty books. His works covered Islamic sciences. This includes kalam jurisprudence and sirah. He helped pave the way for the growth of Shia Islam.
