Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi. It stands as a national monument. It shows the development of the city over centuries. From a fishing and pearling settlement to a modern global metropolis, Qasr Al Hosn has seen it all.

Its story began in 1761. It started as a simple conical watchtower. This tower protected Abu Dhabi’s only freshwater well. Mohammed Al Bastaki oversaw its construction. In 1793, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan expanded the tower into a small fort. It then became the permanent residence of the ruling Sheikh.

The late 1930s brought significant change. Revenues from Abu Dhabi’s first oil license allowed for a major extension. Qasr Al Hosn took on its present shape. It remained the emir’s palace and seat of government until 1966. The name Qasr Al Hosn means “Fortified Palace”.

Qasr Al Hosn has been renovated many times. It was once known as the White Fort. This was because of bright white paint during renovations in 1976-1983. Today, Qasr Al Hosn is partially open to the public. It is a place for historical, archaeological, and architectural research.

Inside Qasr Al Hosn, a museum displays artifacts and pictures. These exhibits represent the history of the country. A range of historical weapons are also on display. Walking through Qasr Al Hosn is like stepping into a time capsule.

The Inner Fort was constructed in 1795. The Outer Palace was built between 1939 and 1945. Looking up, you can see the original watchtower. It once overlooked coastal trade routes. It protected the growing community on the island.
