Gazing upon Qalandya Mosque, its elegant twin towers pierce the sky. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of resilience, standing proudly amidst a landscape marked by conflict. Qalandya Mosque sits within a village known by the same name, nestled between Jerusalem and Ramallah. The village of Qalandya itself is a small, beautiful place, bordered by dense fir forests and patches of olive groves. It feels a world away from the bustling checkpoint nearby.

Qalandya Mosque’s beauty is striking. Its two attractive towers draw the eye, hinting at the rich history within. Qalandiya’s historical roots run deep, with Crusaders referencing the town by its current name in the Middle Ages. The surrounding area has a long and complex history, even beyond the mosque itself. The total area of Qalandiya is a substantial 3940 dunums, with 70 dunums comprising the built-up area. As of 2006, the village housed a population of 1,154. Nearby lies the Qalandia refugee camp, established in 1949, primarily for Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Qalandya Mosque represents a connection to the past. Within the historic center of Qalandya lies an older mosque, known locally as Al-Omari Mosque. This ancient mosque features a rectangular hall covered with a barrel vault. Archaeological findings suggest it dates back to earlier periods. The mihrab, a space for the imam, is adorned with stucco plaster. Interestingly, a Roman coffin has been repurposed as an ablution fountain at the mosque’s entrance. This older mosque has been largely deserted since the construction of a newer mosque with a minaret to its east. A yet newer mosque, Qalandya Mosque, now graces the eastern side of the town with its twin minarets. It serves as a gathering place for the community, where joys and sorrows are shared in a multipurpose hall.

Qalandya Mosque serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the village. Despite its location in a zone of conflict, Qalandiya, the village, retains its beauty and historical significance. The mosque’s elegant towers rise above the surrounding landscape, offering a beacon of hope and a testament to the rich tapestry of history woven into this land.
